Mainz 05 eased their relegation woes with a 2-0 win over favourites Borussia Dortmund in a Bundesliga game staged at the Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday night.
Dortmund came into the game with nothing much to lose but had both Sancho and Haaland in the starting team just to show how serious they were for the tie.
After some dominance in play, they had a perfect opportunity to take the lead in the 13th minute but Axel Witsel missed the opportunity to put his side into the lead when he decided to send his header wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
With Dortmund wasting their chances, Mainz made them pay in the 33rd minute when Jonathan Burkardt scored from a quite difficult position as he leapt high to connect with a cross and power his header low inside the left post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the break.
They were to double their lead four minutes after the resumption when Frank Willenborg was brought down in the box by Lukasz Piszczek with the referee pointing to the spot. Up stepped Jean-Philippe Mateta from 12-yards to double Mainz lead.
Piszczek was to be withdrawn minutes later for Marcel Schmelzer as the hosts looked for a way through past the visitors but it was Mainza once again in the 71st minute who almost tripled their lead. Boetius nicely turned his man inside the box but placed his effort just wide of the right post when everyone thought he was to score.
