Real Madrid moved to the top of La Liga table after a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad away on Sunday night.
Madrid's win, peppered with some controversial decisions, takes them level with Barcelona on points but have a better goal difference.
Captain Sergio Ramos broke the deadlock in the 50th minute from the spot after Sociedad's Diego Llorente had upended Vinicus Jr in the danger zone.
Moments later, Sociedad thought that they were level but VAR ruled that Mikel Merino had obstructed the view of Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois as Adnan Januzaj strike found the back of the net.
In the 71st minute, in-form Karim Benzema doubled Madrid's lead through another controversial manner as Sociedad mobbed the referee claiming that the Frenchman had handled the ball before lashing in.
Merino, however, ensured an exciting finish by lashing in off the crossbar in the 83rd minute.
Madrid are now level with Barca on 65 points after 30 games but climbed above the Catalans, who were held 0-0 at Sevilla on Friday, due to a superior head-to-head record. Sociedad are sixth on 47.
In another match, Valencia beat Osasuna 2-0 at Mestalla to reduce the gap behind fourth-placed Sevilla to six points.
Goncalo Guedes scored a mesmerising solo goal before Rodrigo Moreno made it two. Guedes picked the ball up in his own half and surged past four Osasuna players before completing his stunning run with a driven shot into the top corner.
Osasuna drop to 12th and their next opponents will be Alaves, who suffered a crushing 6-0 defeat away at fellow strugglers Celta Vigo.
Alaves were reduced to 10 men after 27 minutes when Martin Aguirregabiria was sent off and Celta capitalised.
