Man United 2-2 Southampton: Reds lose chance to move to third as Obafemi's late goal earns Saints draw

Manchester United lost the chance to move to third in the English Premier League after they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Southampton on Monday night.

The Reds seemed on course to a narrow 2-1 win, only for Michael Obafemi to score in the 97th minute and deny Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men a win.

The hosts led at half-time thanks to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial's goals on either side of a Stuart Armstrong goal.

United were the first to have sight of the goal after 10 minutes when they quickly took a free-kick, allowing Anthony Martial to race through on goal with Alex McCarthy to beat, but the Saints stopper stood tall and kept out the shot.

The visitors then shocked Ole Gunnar's men on the 13th minute by taking the lead against the run of play.

Paul Pogba was sloppy in possession and was robbed by Danny Ings, with the ball falling to Nathan Redmond, who fed Stuart Armstrong on the far post to find the back of the net with his second touch for a 1-0 lead.

United thought they had equalized on the 16th minute after Martial and Luke Shaw combined well down the left to find Rashford in the center, but he was flagged offside after finding the net.

They did not wait for long though for the equalizer as Marcus Rashford got to the end of a Martial pass on the 23rd minute to confidently finish past McCarthy.

It was 2-1 to United two minutes later a Bruno Fernandes beautifully found Anthony Martial on the wing, and the striker, with acres of space, cut in to unleash an unstoppable shot for a 2-1 lead.

There was little action in the first half with no clear cut chances as the hosts took a 2-1 lead going into the break.

Southampton were the first to make any meaningful attack in the second half, with Nathan Redmond striking a shot towards goal from the edge of the penalty box but could not hit the target as the ball flew just wide of the left post.

Marcus Rashford then tried his luck from distance on the 56th minute, but his thunderbolt shot swerved a few inches wide of the right post.

United then came close to extending their lead on a number of times, with the best chance falling to Rahsford only for his effort to be deflected wide for a corner.

The visitors though fought to the last minute, and their efforts were rewarded as Michael Obafemi scored late on, pouncing on a corner ball from Jan Bednarek to level the scores.

The draw saw United remain fifth in the standings behind Leicester and Chelsea, who both lost over the weekend.
