OFFICIAL: Shanghai Shenhua signs Obafemi Martins as Odion Ighalo replacement

Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua has signed Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins as a replacement for his fellow countryman Odion Oghalo.

Martins has been without a club for the past two years and he rejoins the club to fill the void left by Ighalo who moved to Manchester United in the January window with the English giants having extended his stay until January 2021.

Speaking at his second unveiling, Martins said: “I had been bothered by injuries. It’s a good feeling to come back to a team I’m familiar with.”

Martins scored 19 times in 40 appearances during his first spell with Shanghai Shenhua and will hope to replicate the same performances for his side.

The 35-year-old comes with a wealth of experience having featured for Newcastle United and Birmingham City in the Premier League on top of having a stint in America’s Major League Soccer.

Shenhua will open the delayed CSL season on July 25 against Fabio Cannavaro’s reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande; the league having been in suspension for five months due to coronavirus.
