Champions League qualification: All scenarios broken down including two where Man United could miss out

The race for Champions League qualification in the Premier League will go down to the last matches of the campaign, and what an exciting scenario!

Liverpool and Manchester City have already grabbed the first two tickets, leaving a three-way battle between Chelsea, Man United and Leicester for the remaining two.

Man United were held to a 1-1 draw at home by West Ham on Wednesday night, before Frank Lampard's Chelsea got a 5-3 beating away to Liverpool.

That left the two teams needing a point each in their last outing to qualify.

But what does this mean? There are a number of scenarios in this race, and we break them down.

😈 Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskajer's men need a point at the King Power Stadium to qualify. They can still book their place even if they lose, but only if Wolves win at Stamford Bridge.

Here are some scenarios for them;

Qualification scenarios

  • Win against Leicester and Chelsea draw against Wolves
  • Lose against Leicester and Wolves win against Chelsea
  • Draw against Leicester and Wolves win against Chelsea
  • Draw against Leicester and Chelsea win against Wolves
  • Draw against Leicester and Chelsea draw against Wolves
  • Win against Leicester and Wolves win against Chelsea
  • Win against Leicester and Chelsea win against Wolves

There are however two scenarios in which the Red Devils might miss out entirely.

  • Lose against Leicester and Chelsea draw against Wolves
  • Lose against Leicester and Chelsea win against Wolves

🔵 Chelsea

Frank Lampard's Blues, just like the Reds have their fate in their hands at home to Nuno Espirito's Wolves. They can seal qualification with a win, even though a draw will still suffice since their two challengers, United and Leicester will be battling out.

A win will see them move to third and above United, but only if United drop points at Leicester.

But what about if they lose to Wolves?

If the London club loses and United's clash end in a draw, it means the Reds will finish third, and Leicester will move above them to fourth on goal difference.

This will relegate Lampard's men to fifth and therefore, miss out entirely!.

  • W - Champions League
  • D - Champion League
  • L - Need Man United to beat Leicester

🦊 Leicester

Few people expected Brendan Rodgers' men to be battling to the last day for Champions League qualification, they sat pretty at the top and at some point were considered among title favorites.

But their recent form, including after the restart, has seen them fall to fifth and are in danger of missing out.

However, just like Man United and Chelsea, their fate is in their hands, as they play at home to Ole Gunnar's side knowing a win will see them through.

A draw could also work, but only if Chelsea lose at home to Wolves.
