Barcelona was dethroned by Real Madrid in an interrupted LaLiga campaign but Lionel Messi's individual contributions keep on keeping on.
Messi's league goal tally in 2019-20 was his lowest in over a decade but Leo still walked away with the Pichichi award. And it's not just goals that Messi brings to the party, of course.
🥇 Most goals & most assists
Messi finished with 25 LaLiga goals, four ahead of Real Madrid legend Karim Benzema, to claim a record seventh Pichichi title, breaking a record that stood for over 50 years.
Messi’s also set a new record for most assists in a LaLiga season. eclipsing former teammate Xavi's tally of 21 and became the first player in history to register 20+ goals and 20+ assists in a single season. Now only Thierry Henry (2002-03) and Messi have achieved that feat in the history of Europe's top five leagues.
🥽 Most chances created
Lionel Messi is undoubtedly the creative hub of everything that happens at Barcelona and his staggering assists tally was the result of his ability to create high-quality chances for teammates at a consistent rate.
According to Messi's page on whoscored, no LaLiga player averaged more key passes per game than Messi (2.7), whilst his average of six through balls per fixture was the highest of any player amongst Europe’s top five leagues. Messi created 88 chances for his teammates throughout 2019-20, with 22 of them converted at a rate of exactly 25%. Those are high-quality final passes from a high-quality playmaker who also happens to score goals at the rate of a striker.
🎩 Most hat-tricks
No player has scored more LaLiga hat-tricks in the history of the competition than 33-year-old Lionel Messi. His third treble of the season, against Mallorca, brought up his 36th in Spain's top-flight which edged him above long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

🎯 Most goals from direct free-kicks
Messi also happens to be a master at dead-ball situations and so it proved again in 2019-20 as Leo scored five direct free-kicks in LaLiga. Have a look for yourself.
🤤 Most dribbles
Messi's low centre of gravity, immaculate close control, balance and acceleration off the mark have made him a devastating, daunting & sometimes demoralizing sight for defenders throughout his career. Even at 33, he completed 182 dribbles in LaLiga in 2019-20 at a rate of 5.5 dribbles per game (Messi started 32 matches out of 38 and made one substitute appearance). His dribbles per game tally is the highest in Europe's top five leagues and his tally of 182 is the same as Adama Traore, the most prolific dribbler in the Premier League.
Another LaLiga season where Lionel Messi thrilled the watching world has come and gone, but the Barcelona skipper will be desperate to guide his side to Champions League glory in August.
