English Premier League champions Liverpool are yet to sit midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum down for discussion over a new deal.
The Dutch midfielder has just 12 months remaining on his original five-year contract and there have been rumours that the player will consider his options if he can’t be at per with the club’s highest earners.
According to Sky Sports, Wijnaldum’s agents are ‘waiting for Liverpool to open talks’ and will reportedly seek assurances to ensure the Netherlands international still has a major role to play at the club.
The uncertainties surrounding the player’s future has seen Liverpool get linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara this despite Sky reporting that both the player and the Reds were not in any hurry with the former Newcastle United man.
Since his £25m move from Newcastle in 2016, Wijnaldum has been a mainstay in Jürgen Klopp’s starting XI, making a whopping 186 appearances in all competitions for the Reds.
The player has played a huge part in helping Liverpool win both the Premier League and Champions League titles in the last two seasons and scored in the 54th and 56th minutes during Liverpool’s unbelievably 4-0 Champions League semi-final second-leg win against Barcelona to turn around a 3-0 first-leg deficit.
