English Premier League side Newcastle United were beaten 5-1 by Championship side Middlesbrough in a friendly match at on Tuesday.
The game played at Rockliffe Park saw Newcastle 3-1 down by half time with Britt Assombalonga brace and a goal from Marcus Tavernier doing the damage for Boro before Allan Saint-Maximin reduced the arrears.
The second half saw Grant Hall and a Stephen Walker penalty compound to the Premier League side woes in a game that saw both sides finish with ten men each.
Newcastle had defender Jamal Lascelles and Boro’s Lewis Wing were both sent off for an off-the-ball incident; the game coming days before both sides get into the business end of the game.
Boro will be up against Shrewsbury Town in the Carabao Cup on Friday, before meeting Newcastle for another friendly on Monday.
Newcastle on the other end has planned another friendly clash with Stoke on Saturday and begin their season with a trip to face West Ham on 12 September.
