Brighton 1-3 Chelsea: Lampard's unconvincing Blues off to winning start in the Premier League

Chelsea got off to a flying yet unconvincing start in the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Brighton at the AMEX Stadium on Monday night.

Jorginho, Reece James, and Kurt Zouma got the goals for the Blues, with Leandro Trossard scoring the hosts' lone goal.

The Blues, who handed debuts to Timo Werner and Kai Havertz struggled to find their rhythm for long spells, with the hosts the better side, especially in the opening half.

Team selection

Frank Lampard was not able to call on a number of his star players, with Christian Pulisic failing to recover in time for the match.

His team of new signings were missing, led by Hakim Ziyech and Ben  Chilwell, who are also recovering from injuries.

Captain Cezar Azpicueta was an unused substitute as well, while Mateo Kovacic missed the match as he served a one-match suspension following a red card in the FA Cup final.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was called into the starting lineup alongside N'Golo Kante and Jorginho, with Mason Mount and Havertz pulling wide.

The goals

The first decisive moment came on the 23rd minute as the hosts were caught on the ball deep in their half, with Jorginho feeding Timo Werner from just outside the penalty box.

The striker made quick strides and skipped past the outstretching Mathey Ryan, but he was caught and the referee pointed to the spot.

The Italian, who wore the captain's armband in the absence of Azpilcueta, did his usual “hop, skip and jump” penalty technique to send Ryan the wrong way and give the Blues the lead.

The hosts however kept knocking and it was all square though on the 54th minute as Trossard easily found the back of the net with a low drive from the edge of the box and into the bottom right corner.

The Seagulls' lead however lasted exactly 98 seconds as the Blues restored their lead on the 56th minute and regained control.

Jorginho found Reece James a few yards from the edge of the box, and the youngster unleashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Kurt Zouma then all but gave the Blues the win with a deflected goal on the 66th minute, turning in a corner ball from James for a 3-1 lead.

Despite both teams creating half-chances going into the last 20 minutes, there were no more goals as the Blues picked maximum points on the road.

Next assignment

Frank Lampard will have a lot to do ahead of their second match on Sunday when they host Premier League champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
