Aston Villa has announced the signing of keeper Emi Martinez from Arsenal on a four-year deal the club has announced.
In a statement on their website, Villa said: “Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal.
“The 28-year-old goalkeeper, who lifted the FA Cup with the Gunners last season, has agreed on a four-year deal with the club.”
On his side, Villa manager Dean Smith said of the goalkeeper: “We are really pleased with the signing of our new goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
“We know how highly Arsenal rated him and we watched his outstanding performances last season in a trophy-winning top side.
“We moved for Emi when we saw the opportunity, as it is rare to be able to buy a top-class goalkeeper who hasn’t yet reached their peak age and who can therefore be a key player for our Club for the long term.”
Martinez himself had waved goodbye to Arsenal on Tuesday in a video posted on Instagram thanking the club’s faithful for supporting him through the 11 years he has been with them.
Villa has been looking for a keeper after the departure of Pepe Reina who returned to the Serie A after helping them to keep their Premier League status for another season.
The signing comes just a day after captain Jack Grealish signed a new five-year deal with the club.
