European Roundup: Slow start from AS Roma as Rennes beat Monaco to go top of Ligue One

AS Roma started their Serie A campaign on a sluggish note after settling for a goalless draw against Hellas Verona on Saturday.

Striker Edin Dzeko, who has strongly been linked with a move to Juventus, was left on the bench with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and summer arrival Pedro all given starting berths.

At first, dominating, the Romans were soon put under pressure by Verona with Antonio Mirante deflecting an Adrien Tameze shot over the bar just before the break.

The post again saved the Roma goalkeeper from a Federico Dimarco effort with ten minutes to go, while Roma's Leonardo Spinazzola also rattled the post after 85 minutes.

In another match, Gaetano Castrovilli scored in a 1-0 win for Fiorentina against Torino behind closed doors.

In Laliga, Samuel Chukwueze provided an assist in Villareal’s 2-1 comeback win against Eibar on Saturday.

Chukwueze set up Gerard Moreno who drew Villareal levelled in the 63rd minute after Kike had given Eibar the lead with Paco Alcacer scoring what proved to be the winner in the 71st minute to give Villareal their first win of the new season.

18-year-old left-back Adrien Truffert had a dream Ligue 1 debut as he came off the bench to set up the equalizer and score the winner as Rennes beat Monaco 2-1 to move to the top of the standings.

Truffert had come on for Faitout Maouassa who had picked an injury late in the first half but provided the first assist nine minutes from time for Nzonzi to head home. Truffert then slotted home from the edge of the penalty area two minutes into stoppage time.

Unbeaten Rennes have 10 points from four games, but Saint-Etienne only needs a draw at Nantes on Sunday to reclaim the first place on goal difference.
