Laliga President Javier Tebas believes that Lionel Messi would damage his reputation if he was to leave FC Barcelona.
Messi had expressed his desire to leave the club in the summer with English side Manchester City said to have been ready to wop for the player but Tebas has other ideas about the Argentine leaving Spain.
“We’ve been lucky to enjoy him for so many years but Messi should think very carefully about what he does next.
“If Messi left Barcelona, that reputation he has now and that has worked so well for him would be very damaged. It’s true he could get a better offer financially but with the reputation, he has after more than 20 years, I think he has to hold onto that,” Tebas is quoted by AFP.
Tebas has been one of the vocal voices to back Messi’s stay in Laliga with SERGIO Ramos previously admitting that the Argentine leaving won't be good for Laliga but according to Tebas in his latest interview, there is no player who would define a league.
“It wouldn’t be a drama if Messi left. Cristiano Ronaldo left, Neymar left. Neymar went to PSG and I haven’t seen the French league reaching a super level because of him.
“That’s reality. People who think the players are the ones who define a competition are wrong and I’m glad they think that way because they won’t grow,” he added.
It remains unknown whether Lionel Messi will stay at Barca after this season but a new board is expected to convince him to sign a new deal at the club.
