Mikel Arteta has revealed Arsenal wanted to loan out Reiss Nelson during the summer but the forward insisted he wanted to stay at the Emirates and fight for his place.
Nelson had attracted interests from a number of Premier League clubs including Southampton, Crystal Palace, and Southampton. The forward has managed to play just 81 minutes of the first-team football and wasn't even on the bench during Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to Leicester City despite Willian being on the sidelines.
"We ended up with a large squad at the end of the transfer market," he said.
"We had a few plans in mind with Reiss. One of them was as well to send him on loan to get more minutes because of the competition we have upfront. The reality is he has been really good in training. He wants to stay here. He wants to fight for his place."
The 20-year-old could feature for the Gunners on Thursday when they take on Dundalk in the second match of the Europa League group stage encounter. Arteta is expected to make a number of changes for the midweek's tie as he eyes another tough match against Manchester United this weekend.
