Mourinho slams fringe players after Tottenham loss to Antwerp

Jose Mourinho was left fuming after Tottenham suffered a 1-0 defeat o Antwerp on Thursday evening in a Europa League clash.

Mourinho handed Spurs's fringe players a chance to face Antwerp, as he made nine changes from the team that beat Burnley over the weekend. The Special One was hoping to see his fringe players take the claim but was forced to make four changes at half time following a flat display. Lior Refaelov's 27th minute was enough to secure all the three points for the Belgian side.

Dele Alli, Steven Bergwijn, Carlos Vinicius, and Giovani Lo Celso were subbed off at half time with
Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg coming in. Despite the changes, Antwerp held on to beat the north London side leaving Mou pissed off with the result.

Mourinho refused to comment on Alli's performance who has just started three games for Spurs in all competitions this season and substituted at half time in two of them.

"I don't want to analyze individually," he responded.

"It's fair to say that players with bad performances influence the team but also a team influence individual performances. It's not for me to individualize and bring some names to the table. You can do that yourself. You always tell me 'why is this player not playing, why is this player not playing' - maybe you don't ask me that for a few weeks as you have the answer."

"You know what our best team is. I always like to think the players deserve an opportunity. We have a big squad with lots of good players. It's my responsibility to give them opportunities but it's also their opportunity to catch the chance with both hands and ask for more. Tonight shows my future choices are going to be very easy."

Spurs will put their attention to the weekend's Premier League match as they are set to host Brighton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
