Why Anthony Martial missed match against Southampton

Manchester United played away to Southampton on  Sunday evening, and one man was missing from the starting team; Anthony Martial.

The striker was expected to be in the starting lineup but was ruled out after becoming ill overnight.

“Anthony fell ill overnight so he's in the hotel by himself, poor lad,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told reporters before the game at St Mary's Stadium. “So that's the reason Ant isn't playing.”

The Norwegian named Edinson Cavani on the bench despite starting against Basaksehir in midweek, and he explained why.

“Edinson played well in midweek but we felt Mason [Greenwood] needed a game as well to start with.”

Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba were the other two players to miss the clash, after failing to recover in good time.

Solskjaer also explained the decision to retain Donny van de Beek in his starting lineup.

“Donny is definitely ready,” Ole told us. “He's been good in training and he has been good in games he's played, in the Champions League. It's never been Premier League or Champions League. It's to give him time to settle into the group.”

The trio's absence was however not felt as the Reds came from two goals down to win 3-2, with Cavani stepping off the bench to score a brace and provide an assist.
