The Germany DFB Pokal will have a new champion this season after holders Bayern Munich were knocked out of the competition.
The Bundesliga giants went 6-5 down to little known Holstein on penalties after twice being pegged back by the 2.Bundesliga side in normal time for a 2-2 draw.
Serge Gnabry had given the visitors the lead on his return from injury but Bouma Sarr equalized for Hostein. Leroy Sané produced a beautiful free-kick to restore Bayern’s lead in the second half but Johannes van den Bergh’s looping cross was met by the powerful head of Hauke Wahl who leveled again for Kiel to take this game to extra-time.
With the extra time having no winner, the game headed to penalties where Bayern Munich’s Marc Roca saw his penalty saved by Gelios before Bartels scored the decisive spot-kick to knock the current holders.
