European super club Real Madrid has never been shy to put their money where their mouth is.
At the turn of the millennium, Los Blancos famously embarked on the Galácticos policy pursued by club president Florentino Pérez where in his first tenure he purchased at least one galáctico in the summer of every year. Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham were the stellar names added to the Madrid galaxy.
That left a legacy at the club for some time, and although it didn't immediately bear fruit, it ultimately and indirectly led to the acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo. In 2009, Madrid spent an eye-watering €258.5m in one window.
- 🇵🇹 Cristiano - €94m
- 🇧🇷 Kaká - €67m
- 🇫🇷 Karim Benzema - €35m
- 🇪🇸 Xabi Alonso - €34.5m
- 🇪🇸 Raúl Albiol - €15m
- 🇪🇸 Álvaro Negredo - €5m
- 🇪🇸 Álvaro Arbeloa - €4m
- 🇪🇸 Esteban Granero - €4m
More than a third of the entire outlay for that window went towards the signing of Ronaldo. 438 games, 450 goals & four Champions League titles later, that looked like a pretty shrewd investment. Of these eight signings, only Karim Benzema is still at the club, with the €35m fee paid for his services also looking like a massive bargain.
Madrid's transfer strategy has shifted somewhat in recent times, but they've still not been shy to fork out considerable sums of money, most recently for talented Brazilian youngsters Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo & Reinier Jesus.
We'll be following their progress at the Bernabéu closely.
