Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic are fit and will be available for the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
The Blues travel to Bucharest for the first leg of the last-16 against Diego Simeone's in-form side, after the decision was arrived at to host the game in a neutral venue owing to COVID-19 restrictions.
The availability of the duo is a major boost for Tuchel, even though they will still miss the services of Thiago Silva, who is yet to fully recover from an injury he picked during a Premier League match against Tottenham.
"This is a game that is certainly made for someone of Thiago’s quality but unfortunately, he is not available," explained Tuchel. "He is training right now, while we are leaving shortly,"
"I’m very happy that both Kai and Christian are in the group. They trained with us earlier and had no complaints. They will travel with us and they are in the squad for tomorrow,"
Despite Atleti losing their home advantage, Tuchel expects a tough match against one of the best teams in Europe this season.
"Of course t's a big test," added the German. "They are an experienced club at his level with an experienced coach. Hopefully, it brings out the best in us,"
"We will do things our way, they will do things their way. It's clear what you get when you play Atletico: "fighting, experience, a team with a good mentality,"
"Clearly, it’s a disadvantage for Atletico Madrid to lose their home ground for the first leg. We don’t have to talk around that, it’s obvious,"
Both teams had mixed weekend results, with Atleti losing at home 2-0 to Levante, while Tuchel's side settled for a 1-1 draw away to Southampton.
