Atletico Madrid 0-1 Chelsea: Giroud overhead Kick hands The Blues an advantage

Oliver Giroud overhead kick in the second half was all Chelsea needed to record a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in their Champions League game on Tuesday night.

As expected, the game was a tight affair in the earlier proceedings with Chelsea the first to receive a setback as early as the second minute when Mason Mount was booked for leaning into Joao Felix inside the centre circle; a card that means he will miss the second leg of the tie.

The Blues almost shot themselves on the foot a minute later when Mendy’s first touch, after some interplay by the visitors in defence,  fell to Saul Niguez for a tap-in but the Atleti man had a bad first touch which forced him to shoot the ball wide.

Chelsea was finding it hard to break the Atleti rearguard with another Atleti scare coming after Suarez pulled a cut back to the on the onrushing Lemar but the ball ran over him with his trial after readjusting going wide. A similar chance fell to Chelsea on the other end with Hudson-Odoi and Mount combining on the right; the latter’s low cross zipping past Werner ahead of the near post.

Chelsea then thought they had won a penalty when Werner played a one-two with Giroud with the Frenchman tumbling in the penalty area, but the referee allowed the game to continue with a VAR check vindicating his decision; no team getting the better of the other in the half.

Chelsea started the second half in some good fashion and their efforts were repaid in the 68th minute when Olivier Giroud gave them the lead; the French striker pulling an acrobatic kick past Oblak with the home side claiming he was in an offside position. After along review from VAR, the goal stood as the ball bounced off Filipe Luiz before finding Giroud who was earlier in an offside position.

Changes were done later by both teams but Chelsea stood their ground to carry a one-goal lead heading into the second leg.
