🦁 Will Harry Kane catch Alan Shearer's mark of 260 EPL goals? Analysing the key facts & figures

"Harry Kane does what Harry Kane does."

Those were the words of world-renowned Premier League commentator Peter Drury when the Spurs goal-machine put his side in front against Everton at Goodison Park in April in a match that ultimately ended 2-2 (Kane scored a brace).

Kane's overall tally in the top-flight now stands at 166 goals. He stands 7th in the all-time reckoning.

🤖 20+ in five separate seasons

Consistency is a characteristic that we tend to associate with the greatest performers across any sporting code.

The brilliance of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Michael Jordan, Usain Bolt, Serena Williams, Roger Federer & many others down the years resided not only in their natural athletic gifts but, crucially, their ability to show it to the world year upon year.

Kane is one of only four players in Premier League history to hit 20+ goals in five or more separate seasons, moving alongside Gunners great Thierry Henry, a man whom he will be aiming to eclipse next on the all-time scoring table.

Consistency is key, and it's one of Kane's defining strengths as a footballer.

🐐 Kane vs Shearer

Alan Shearer's final 20+ goal season in the Premier League was 2003-04, a year in which he turned 34 and Shearerhit the last of his 260 top-flight strikes when he was 35 Harry Kane turns 34 after the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.

Kane's total of 163 EPL goals in his last seven completed campaigns has arrived at an average of 23.28 goals per season, although two of his last three have contained 17 and 18, which combined are well below his overall average since the start of 2014-15. He roared back into life in 2020-21 though, scoring 23 goals and supplying 14 assists (leading numbers in both metrics).

Kane is now 94 goals adrift of Shearer's magical mark at the very top of the pile. He would need to score less than 16 goals a season in six more top-flight campaigns before he turns 34. On paper, that sounds incredibly doable for a man of Kane's pedigree.

🤕 Injuries

One massive spanner in the works is Harry Kane's ankles and their predisposition to injury. The England skipper's calendar years of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 have all been heavily disrupted by ankle problems, and a thigh rupture robbed Spurs of his services for two months at the back-end of 2019-20. Despite all of that, he's still posted elite goal numbers.

🔮 The future

If Kane stays in England, there's every chance that the frighteningly-prolific Spurs number 10 will become the leading goal-scorer in the rich pantheon of Premier League greats. If he moves abroad, this whole debate will become irrelevant.
