Athletic Bilbao manager Marcelino has been linked with the vacant managerial role at English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
The seat felt vacant after the sacking of Jose Mourinho on Monday with 29-year-old Ryab Mason tasked with leading the team until the end of the season.
Despite reports stating that former Chelsea FC man Maurizio Sarri is one of the favorites to take over the team, The Athletic now indicates that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is working to draw up a shortlist of candidates to succeed Jose Mourinho before interviewing three or four and choosing the right one.
The report claims that Marcelino is one of the managers who have been contacted with the 55-year-old’s contract set to expire in 2022.
The Guardian reported that Levy wants an attack-minded manager to replace the sacked Portuguese and is keen for the eventual replacement to be modern in outlook and have strong credentials in the development of young players.
An attacking midfielder during his playing days, Marcelino has managed nine different clubs in his country and won the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 2018-19 and recently led Bilbao to the finals of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 editions, losing both.
