Roping a manager from a rival team has never been so easy in the world of football more so when he has a longer contract with his team.
Bayern Munich however did what few teams have done in the past by agreeing on a world record €25m fee for the 33-year-old coach Julian Nagelsmann from Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig. While it was a lot of money spent on a manager, it was not out of the norm as it is a move that has been pulled by different clubs across Europe before.
So who are these teams who bought the contracts of rival managers?
- José Mourinho (€8m)
When Mourinho won the treble with Inter Milan, it was going to be an unthinkable move for any club to go for his services but Real Madrid did just that when they paid a reported €8m fee to the Italian giants to take the Special One to the Bernabéu.
- Rúben Amorim (€10m)
Having failed to win the Portuguese league title for many years, Sporting Lisbon thought that luring Amorim from Braga in 2020 would do the trick for them. The move seems to have been a masterstroke with the Lisbon-based club on course for their first league title since 2002.
- Brendan Rodgers (€10.5m)
Rodgers had been billed as one of the best coaches in the UK when his Swansea side took the Premier League by storm in their season back in the English top-flight in 2011. It was only a matter of time before big clubs circles for him and after a stint with Liverpool, he went to Celtic where he left abruptly for Leicester halfway through the 2018/19 season, but the Bhoys were at least well compensated for the deal.
- André Villas-Boas (€15m)
The Portuguese arrival is one of the biggest blunders said to have been done by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. The Blue paid an astonishing €15m to snatch Villas-Boas from Porto way back in 2011 and he went on to last just 40 matches.
- Julian Nagelsmann (€25m)
Villa Boas fee stood for a very long time before it was announced on Tuesday that Bayern had secured the services of Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig in a fee that could rise to €25m when bonuses are included.
The manager will take over from Hansu Flick who is said to be on his way to the German national team.
