Fabian Balbuena's red card against Chelsea overturned

Fabian Balbuena's red card during Chelsea vs West Ham United Premier League clash on Saturday has been overturned on appeal.

"West Ham United can confirm that Fabián Balbuena’s red card in Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea has been overturned on appeal," a statement from the Hammers read.

Balbuena was shown a red card by center referee Chris Kavanagh after his foul on Ben Chilwell, catching the Chelsea fullback with his studs. The 29-year-old's foul wasn't initially seen by the referee but instead was brought to attention by the VAR. After footage review, he was sent off with David Moyes labeling the decision as 'rant, rotten' as his side suffered a 1-0 loss to their top-four rivals.

"I think it's a decision made by somebody who's never played the game. I don't know where Fabi Balbuena is supposed to plant his foot," Moyes said after the game.

"If they do think that, you'll look at the one a few minutes later, with Coufal and Rudiger, a similar challenge, but they never did anything about it."

The defender will now be eligible for the Hammers’ trip to Burnley on Bank Holiday Monday, 3 May.
