Manchester United will take a four-goal lead to Rome after smashing six past AS Roma in their 6-2 victory in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals match staged at Old Trafford.
United took the lead in the 9th minute through Bruno Fernandes. Paul Pogba drove through the midfield, fired the ball into the feet of Cavani who played a through pass behind for Fernandes. Paul Lopez raced off his line but Fernandes produced the cutest of chipped finishes over the Roma keeper.
Roma was awarded a penalty after Pogba handled the ball inside the danger zone as the Frenchman tried to have a slide in to block a cross.
Lorenzo Pellegrini stepped up to take it and had a powerful and price shot. David de Gea dived the right way but the shot was too hard to be stopped.
Edin Dzeko haunted United once again at Old Trafford. Spainazzola made a run, Wan-Bissaka initially stopped the winger but he recovered the loose ball and played it inside to Mkhitaryan. The former United man slipped Pellegrini in behind, he was onside and he squared for former Manchester City striker Dzeko, who had the simple task of tapping home his sixth Old Trafford goal from close range.
United leveled the scores immediately after the restart of the second half through Edinson Cavani. Pogba played the ball up to Cavani, he laid it off to Fernandes before getting it back. The Uruguayan produced an unstoppable effort into the top corner.
Minutes later United were awarded a penalty and Bruno Fernandes stepped up and made no mistake giving United the lead.
In the 75th minute, United were running riot and Paul Pogba made it 5-2 in favor of the hosts.
Roma were once again short of numbers at the break. The Red Devils broke ruthlessly on them and Greenwood was left in yards and yards of space in front of goal. From there, there's only one outcome, the sixth goal for United.
It was a great night for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and surely but surely his semi-final hoodoo has been broken and the Red Devils have one leg in the final.
