Haaland is Bundesliga Player of the Year

Despite Robert Lewandowski's 41 goals, Erling Haaland has been awarded the Bundesliga Player of the Season for 2020-21.

In a 5-2 triumph over Augsburg on Saturday, Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller's record of 40 league goals in a single season by scoring with the final kick of the game – and the season.

Muller, a legend at Bayern Munich, had accomplished the feat in the 1971-72 season.

For most of Saturday's game at Allianz Arena, it looked as if Lewandowski would come agonizingly close to sitting out front on his own.

In a game that marked the end of Hansi Flick's term as Bayern head coach, he had a total of 10 shots, six of which were on target, but the Poland star eventually got his goal at the last minute.

However, Lewandowski's efforts were not enough to earn him the Bundesliga's Player of the Season accolade, which went to another of the league's top goal scorers.

Haaland scored 27 goals in 28 Bundesliga games for Borussia Dortmund, and has been linked with a big move this season.

Haaland's score included the 20-year-old scoring two or more goals in 11 Bundesliga games, with only Muller having done so more times in a single season (also in 1971-72). (12).

Only two of Haaland's goals came from the penalty spot, compared to eight and seven for Lewandowski and Silva, respectively.

"An honour to be awarded with the Bundesliga Player of the Season! An achievement not just for me but for the whole BVB family," Haaland tweeted on Tuesday.

"We won this award together!"
