Villarreal manager Unai Emery has hailed the mentality of his players after they beat Manchester United on Wednesday night to lift the Europa League trophy.
The Yellow Submarine ousted United in post-match penalties after both teams were tied on a 1-1 draw in regular time. Speaking after the game, the former Arsenal boss admitted that his team knows how to compete and finished stronger than their opponents.
“I think the players have shown a good mentality throughout the competition and in the final. We’ve known how to compete, suffer, score, and we finished stronger than them. Penalties aren’t a lottery; you have to have a strong head to shoot in that situation of maximum pressure and the players have been fabulous,” Emery said post-match in comments carried by Marca.
In the game, Villarreal took the lead on the night through Gerard Moreno in the 29th minute but United’s equalizer came in the 55th through Edinson Cavani. The tie went right to the wire, with neither team able to find a winner in extra time. Villarreal finally won 11-10 on penalties.
