Lionel Messi shone as Argentine overcame Ecuador 3-0 to make it to the semi-finals of Copa America.
The Barcelona captain scored once and assisted the other two goals with the win booking them a date against Colombia in Brasilia on Tuesday.
In the game, it was Ecuador who had the most clear-cut chances in the earlier proceedings but Enner Valencia and Alan Franco both failed to punish their opponents when they were presented with chances.
Argentina made them in the 41st minute when Messi laid the ball on a plate for Rodrigo De Paul to score his first international goal. Ecuador pressed for an equalizer but was punished late on when an error by Piero Hincapié allowed Messi to set up Martínez to apply a clinical finish.
Hincapié’s night went from bad to worse as he received a red card in the dying stages, with Messi rubbing salt in the wound by converting the resulting free-kick in the dying minutes.
In the same day, Colombia made it to the semis after overcoming Uruguay 4-2 in post-match penalties after the match had finished goalless in regular time.
