English Premier League giants Manchester United are leading the race to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.
There had been reports that Liverpool was interested in the player as they look to replace Gini Wiljnaldum but according to Mundo Deportivo journalist Francesc Aguilar claims, United has jumped ahead of the queue for the player.
Other tabloids reported that Barcelona Barcelona entered negotiations with Atletico over a swap deal for Saul that would see Antoine Griezmann return to his former club but the progress has not gone as planned.
It is claimed that The Blaugrana value Griezmann higher than Saul and wants some cash added as part of the exchange deal with this move complicating issues; the player's agent Jonathan Barnett said to be in advanced negotiations with United.
United is in the market for a defensive midfielder despite having an array of players who can play in that position in Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Fred, Nemanja Matic, and James Garner.
While Matic might stay, Fred and McTominay are currently the preferred players in that role but with the future of Paul Pogba still uncertain, the arrival of Saul might give United another option in that position.
