Social media can be a dangerous place at times, with anonymous accounts making outrageous claims, but there has been a growing rumor involving a Premier League player in recent days.
The player in question is a member of Everton, a top English Premier League team that has already suspended him pending the outcome of the investigation. Gylfi Sigurdsson, an Iceland midfielder, was arrested, allegedly, for alleged child sex offenses, according to sources.
There is no official word on the matter, but Everton fans should be aware that the club issued a brief statement:
"Everton can confirm it has suspended a First-Team player pending a police investigation. The Club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time."
In a statement released after the arrest, Greater Manchester police confirmed the arrest of a 31-year-old male on suspicion of child sex offenses, and that the accused has been released on bail "pending inquiries."
The police also released to the media a few specifics about the arrested person, including the fact that he is a millionaire who plays for a Premier League club and regularly represents his country.
