Sevilla manager reveals why Jules Koundé did not join Chelsea

Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui has for the first time spoken about Jules Kounde's failed move to European Champions Chelsea.

The Spanish club rejected a number of Chelsea bids for the Frenchman during the recently-closed transfer window, despite personal terns having been agreed between the player and Thomas Tuchel's side.

Speaking to Diario de Sevilla via Fabrizio Romano, Lopetegui revealed why Kounde was not allowed to leave.

“Koundé didn’t join Chelsea because our Sevilla board decided it was the right thing to do, based on the value of the offers. For me it’s positive - he’ll perform again at top level."

The Blues were asked to trigger the defender's  £68 release clause, insisting the player could not leave for anything less.

Tuchel sold Kurt Zouma to create room for Kounde at the back, and it's understood they could push for a move again during the January transfer window.

Kounde was left fuming because of the board's decision not to sell him and sent a cryptic message through his social media.
