Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has revealed that he tried to sign Lionel Messi over the summer before his move to Paris Saint Germain.
Messi who had just helped Argentina to the Copa America title returned late to Barcelona after being given more days off and while he was confident that he was going to sign a new deal with the club he had represented since childhood, things went south with the Catalans allowing him to leave for free.
In an interview with Argentine media outlet Ole, Simeone admitted that he talked with Messi's former teammate Luis Suarez to ask him if his friend would fancy moving to Wanda Metropolitano.
"With what happened at we called Luis (Suarez). With all due respect, I didn't call Leo, but I did call Luis to ask how Messi was doing and whether he'd be willing or if there was a small chance he'd come to Atletico. It was something that only lasted three hours because PSG were already obsessed with signing him," Simeone said.
Suarez made the move from Barcelona to Atletico in 2020 and quickly established himself as an important part of the Atletico Madrid squad where he played a major role in the club's run to the La Liga title last season.
