FC Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero has explained his main reason for denying to inherit Lionel Messi’s iconic number 10 jersey at the club.
As widely reported and to the shock of the global football community, La Liga’s financial rules restrained the club from offering Lionel Messi a new contract.
Before the devastating news was confirmed, Aguero had meanwhile joined Barca with the expectation to play his football alongside Messi - but the dream was not to be as Messi was forced to leave and join PSG.
The Argentine’s departure soon meant that his number 10 jersey was available to talents like Aguero - but the former Manchester City star chose number 19.
"I chose No. 19 because it was available, and I wear it with the Argentina national team," Aguero said at a press conference, as per Goal.
"The players asked me to take the No. 10, but I refused. In fact, the No. 10 looks good on Ansu Fati."
"Ansu is still a young player and it is difficult to stay at a high level all the time," he added.
"As experienced players, we do our best to help the youngsters. Ansu has a lot of talent and he trains a lot. We are fortunate that he is in Barcelona,” the striker nicknamed ‘Kun’ concluded.
Coming up next for the Catalan giants is the El Classico against Real Madrid this weekend.
