🚨 Benzema brace fires Real Madrid to victory at Santiago Bernabéu, AC Milan held

Karim Benzema scored a stunning brace as Real Madrid beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in a Champions League clash played on Wednesday night.

Carlo Ancelotti's started the match on a high and maintained the same energy throughout the game.

The hosts got their first chance after just five minutes when Luka Modric latched on to a precise pass and one-on-one with the keeper slammed the ball towards the left-hand post but the keeper was alert and made a world-class save.

Shakhtar responded with an attack of their own in the 11th minute as Alan Patrick unleashed a thunderous shot from the edge of the box but his shot rattled the left post.

Madrid then took the lead in the 14th minute as a catastrophic error from the visitors gave Benzema the opportunity to score from close range.

Luka Modric then forced a smart save from Anatolli Trubin in the 17the minute after unleashing a ferocious strike from the edge of the box.

Just after the half-hour mark, the visitors got a chance to equalise but Fernando fired just inches wide of the right post from inside the box after he latched on to a splendid Mykhailo Mudryk ball.

Shakhtar's persistence eventually paid off in the 39th minute as some superb work from Alan Patrick allowed Fernando to beat Thibaut Courtois with a brilliant shot into the top of the net.

Fernando almost doubled Shakhtar's lead just before the break, but Courtois did some great job in keeping his shot from kissing the back of the net.

Benzema then scored the winner on the hour mark when Vinicius Junior showed great vision and found the Frenchman with a cheeky pass inside the box, and his first-time shot sailed into the bottom right corner.

Both teams had chances to add to their respective tallies late on but none could score as Madrid picked their third win.

They lead their group on nine points, with Sheriff second on six points ahead of their match against Inter Milan.

In another match, AC Milan came from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw at home to Benfica.

Luis Dias gave the Portuguese the lead after just six minutes, but a Chancel Mbemba own goal just after the hour-mark ensured the points were shared.
