European Roundup: Messi opens Ligue 1 account as Xavi begins Barca reign with a win

Lionel Messi is off the mark in Ligue 1 as he helped PSG to a 3-1 win over Nantes on Saturday.

The Argentine curled a left-footed effort from outside the box three minutes from time, adding to Dennis Appiah’s own goal after Randal Kolo Muani had canceled out Kylian Mbappé’s second-minute opener.

The home side was forced to play the better part of the game with ten men following the sending off of keeper Keylor Navas; the win seeing PSG open a 12 point lead in the French top flight.

In Italy, AC Milan title hopes were dented following a 4-3 loss to Fiorentina. Alfred Duncan and Ricardo Saponara gave the hosts a two-goal half-time lead with Serbian striker Vlahovic making it 3-0 on the hour mark.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had other ideas, scoring twice in quick succession. It proved to be in vain, however, as Vlahovic scored his second late on before Ibrahimovic hit the bar, with the ball rebounding in off Fiorentina’s Lorenzo Venuti.

Earlier, Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci scored a penalty in each half to earn his side a 2-0 win over Lazio on Saturday that lifted the Turin club into seventh place in Serie A and ended their opponents’ 19-match unbeaten home run.

In the Bundesliga, Marco Reus struck late as Borussia Dortmund emerged 2-1 winners over Stuttgart; the win seeing them move to just a point below leaders Bayern Munich.

Bayer Leverkusen edged to a 1-0 home win over Bochum to go fourth, a point above Union Berlin, who beat Hertha 2-0 in the capital’s derby game.

In Spain, Xavi Hernandez started his Barcelona reign with a 1-0 win over Espanyol in the Catalan Derby; the all-important goal scored by Memphis Depay three minutes after the resumption.

On the same day, Atlético Madrid’s Brazilian defender Felipe headed a late goal to claim a 1-0 home win against Osasuna.

Sevilla edged to the top of the table as Ivan Rakitic struck in stoppage time to rescue a point at home to Alavés, who led twice before settling for a 2-2 draw.
