πŸ‘•πŸ€” Football stars with odd jersey numbers: 0, 121 and 99s

Some football jerseys' numbers are just forgettable and hardly noticeable, and then there are those that are impossible to miss for being so odd. We sit there and wonder: Is this even allowed?

Some jersey number choices are not simply odd for the digit, but rather the footballer’s playing position in relation to the chosen number. A prime example is when Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o, a center forward, donned the number 5 jersey at Everton.

The Moroccan star Hachim Zerouali astonished the world when he became the first player in Scotland to wear the shirt number '0' in 2000. The number was soon outlawed the following season by the Scottish Premier League and the Premier League in England.

Zerouali tragically died in a car accident in Morocco in December 2004 aged 27.

Inter Milan once signed the great Brazilian striker Ronaldo. This later saw the club’s jersey number nine taken away from Ivan Zamorano. The Chilean footballer came up with a solution, he wore a bizarre 8+1.

Former Dutch superstar midfielder and enigma Edgar Davids wore jersey number 1 in 2013 at Barnet. Davids said that he intended to "set a trend" of midfielders wearing the number 1 shirt.

Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil took the No.67 jersey when he joined Fernehache this season. The German star said it was a homage to the area code he grew up in.

Former Australia international Tommy Oar once wore jersey number 121. He later explained that the decision was simply based on the fact that he was the 121st registered player for the country during Asian Cup qualifiers.

Here are other bizarre numbers we’ve seen:

  • Ronaldinho – No. 80
  • Mario Balotelli – No. 45
  • Ronaldo Nazario – No. 99
  • Hachim Zerouali – No. 0

  • Edgar Davids – No. 1
  • Tommy Oar – No. 121
  • Asamoah Gyan – No. 3
  • Bixente Lizarazu – No. 69
  • Ivan Zamorano – 1+8
  • Gianluigi Buffon – No. 88
  • Mesut Ozil – No. 67
