Benfica opponents can field nine players due to Covid outbreak

Portuguese giants Benfica won a farcical Primeira Liga match after their opponents Belenenses SAD was forced to start the game with nine men.

Belenenses SAD took on Primeira Liga leaders Benfica with just nine players available after their side was hit by Covid. Two of the players who started were goalkeepers, meaning 20-year-old goalie João Monteiro had to play outfield.

Things went from bad to worse as they fell behind to an own goal from Eduardo Kau after just one minute and by half-time it was already 7-0.

The situation then went from bizarre to farcical when only seven Belenenses players emerged for the second half and when one more went down injured just after the restart, the match was abandoned at 7-0.

Belenenses' Covid woes began early in the week when one of their squad who had shown symptoms tested positive. That was then followed by 13 further players being affected, along with four members of their coaching staff.
