Unexpectedly, Sunderland started the game in a thrilling fashion and thought they had won a penalty in the fifth minute when Stewart tripped in the Arsenal boss after going past Elneny but his appeals fell to deaf ears.
Despite the thrilling start from the visitors, it's the hosts who took the lead in 17th through Eddie Nketiah. Cedric swung a corner with Holding rising to plant his headers goalwards but while Burge did well to parry the threat, Nketiah was to bundle the ball home from close range.
Arsenal were to double their lead ten minutes later when Wright deflected the ball into his own net following a Cedric strike. While the visitors reduced the areas through Broadhead with a delightful chip above Leno minutes to the break, Arsenal was to turn the gear in the second half.
Nketia was to add his second and Arsenal's third of the night four minutes after the resumption with a gorgeous flick after being put through by Tavares with the striker completing his hattrick with another sumptuous goal after Nicolas Pepe had done the donkey work.

While Arsenal dominated proceedings for much better of the game, they had to wait until the final minute to score the fifth goal. Debutant Charlie Patino got his name into the scoresheet after connecting well to a Pepe cut back.
Arsenal will now wait for who they will meet in the next round with six teams still in contention. In the other games, Brentford will be up against Chelsea, Liverpool hosting Leicester City, and Tottenham coming up against Sunderland.
The semi-final draw will be done after the Wednesday games.
