Barcelona dumped out of Copa del Rey as Real Madrid make the quarter-finals

Barcelona's season got from bad to worse as they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey on Thursday night.

The Catalan club are having a season to forget, and it got worse as they lost 3-2 away at Athletic Bilbao to bow out.

Iker Muniain gave Athletic the lead early on as he beautifully curled the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen into the top corner.

Ferran Torres then equalised for Xavi Hernandez's team with his first goal in a Barcelona shirt, finding the back of the net from the edge of the box.

The match seemed to be headed for a 1-1 draw until Inigo Martinez gave Athletic the lead with four minutes to go, and for a moment it was enough to see them through.

Things however changed as Pedri scored a fine stoppage-time equaliser to send the match into extra time.

Muniain then scored the winner from the penalty spot in extra time after the video assistant referee spotted a handball from Jordi Alba inside the area.

In another match, Real Madrid sailed through to the quarters after a hard-fought 2-1 extra-time win over Elche.

Marcelo was shown red in extra time to leave the Los Blancos with 10 men, and Elche took the lead from a free-kick that deflected off Dani Ceballos to wrong-foot the goalkeeper.

Isco then equalised for Madrid, before Eden Hazard stepped off the bench to score the winner.

There was a bit of controversy though as Elche's last-minute goal was disallowed.

Real Madrid joined Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Valencia, Real Betis, Rayo Vallecano, Mallorca and Cadiz in the quarter-finals.
