The result was historic for K'Ogalo as they became the first Kenyan club to proceed to the CAF Confederations Cup knockout phases. The manner in which Gor Mahia did it made the victory even sweeter as Ernest Wendo and Shafik Batambuze were handed red cards and coach Hassan Oktay was sent to the stands. Jacques Tuyisenge scored the all-important goal from the penalty spot in the 58th minute to send Gor to the quarters.

Gor Mahia lost Humphrey Mieno, Ephrem Guikan and Innocent Wafula at the start of the season and Oktay is keen to get their replacements in this transfer window, "I need one striker, one wide player, and one mobile central midfield player, but if they don't get it for me I have enough quality with every single player." When pushed to say whether he has identified any signings, Oktay gave little away, "One but I can't say it."
