Footballing legend Pele has declared himself fit after undergoing surgery at a Brazilian hospital to remove a kidney stone.

Pele, 78, who was previously admitted to a hospital in Paris with a urinary infection, was released from the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo on Monday.

A statement on his Twitter account said: "My dear friends. I'm happy to be able to write again to let you know that I'm fine.

"I would like to thank the medical staff of Albert Einstein Hospital, and especially you, for the prayers and positive energy. I'm back on the field, thirsting for new goals in life."

Pele has been faced with several health issues in recent years including hip and knee problems.
