🔴 💣 Emery's decision to appoint five Arsenal captains backfiring

12 Jul 2019, 07:45

Arsenal has long been accused of lacking the leadership and grit required to win titles and ahead of the 2019/2020 season, uncertainty surrounds the club again.

Laurent Koscielny, Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka and Mesut Özil were named in Emery's leadership group but that quintet is disintegrating before his eyes. Aaron Ramsey's departure to Juventus was a long time in the making and didn't come as a surprise when the deal finally went through, the same can perhaps be said of Petr Cech's retirement. The fact that Ramsey, a player in the prime of his career, was allowed to leave as contract talks broke down is an indicator that all is not well at the club.

However, the trio that still remains in North London all face uncertain futures and that's the last thing the club needs ahead of a season where rebuilding will be necessary.

Koscielny goes on strike 🏖

Ageing skipper Laurent Koscielny probably has a couple more years left in him at the top level and Arsenal could do with his leadership and influence both on and off the pitch. However, the 34-year-old recently refused to travel with his team-mates to America on Thursday as the Frenchman wants to join Bordeaux this summer.

With Arsenal in desperate need of reliable centre backs and defensive combinations, they can't really afford to lose a man of Koscielny's experience and influence right now with Shkodran Mustafi unconvincing, Rob Holding injured and Calum Chambers returning from a loan spell at Fulham.

Özil’s high wages chasing suitors off 😳

Even die-hard Mesut Özil fans are starting to lose patience with the temperamental playmaker. By far and away the club's highest earner, the World Cup winner's lack of consistency and commitment to the cause has placed Arsenal's hierarchy in a difficult position. His huge salary was one of the contributing factors to Ramsey's departure as the Welshman felt he should be on parity with Ozil, but the club couldn't afford to make that the case.

Turkish club Fenerbahce has expressed an interest but Özil's wages are well out of their reach. This presents a real dilemma for Unai Emery.

Xhaka unsettled 😐

Arsenal's search for a dominant, authoritative central midfielder with leadership qualities seemed to reach a solution with the signing of Granit Xhaka. However, the Swiss player has yet to convince in his time at North London and now rumours are linking him with a move to Inter Milan.

It's already clear that it's bound to be a summer of massive change at Arsenal, but they will need to keep some of their senior figures at the club if they are to reach their objectives for the coming season.

What do you expect from Emery's men in 2019/2020 and who will the captain be?
