Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka looks a better player than Nicolas Pepe following his super performance in the Europa League, says former player Martin Keown.
The Arsenal teenager had a wonderful night on Thursday as the Gunners beat Frankfurt 3-0 in the opening match. Being Saka's first appearance of the season, he caught the eyes of many as grabbed a goal while providing two assists in the process. And Keown compared the 18-year-old's performance to those of summer signing Pepe who has failed to make an impact since his arrival this summer from Lille. The club's record signing has so far made five appearances for the Gunners in the Premier League and came off the bench against Frankfurt but he is yet to register a goal under his name.
Speaking to BT Sport, Keown said, "They toil away, trying to get young players in and they’ve found one in Saka. You think of the way Pepe is playing at the minute, they paid £72m for him and this kid looked better than him tonight."
"By the way, [Joe] Willock as well, he’s got his reward, this has been a breakthrough moment for him. He got a little bit lucky, but that’s all 100% the academy, that first goal for Arsenal. When Saka gets the ball [for the second goal], it shows composure, he’s passing it into the goal, it’s a beautiful finish. To think he’s 18 years of age."
The north London club will now put their focus in the Premier League after a disappointing 2-2 draw against Watford over the weekend when they take on Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday.
