Chelsea registered a 1-0 win over hosts Ajax in a Champions League Group H match staged at Johan Cruijff Arena on Wednesday 23rd.
Michy Batshuayi came from the bench to win the match for Chelsea, who beat stubborn Ajax. The Blues played their own game, bided their time, and two fine substitutions from Lampard contributed to the win with Pulisic contributing to Batshuayi's goal.
Ajax took the lead through Promes, who send the home fans into a wild celebration. Ziyech crossed from the right, and the ball deflected into Promes' path at the far post, and he tapped home. However, the centre referee was forced to go for a VAR check. It was so tight, Promes was inches offside from Ziyech's delivery and the goal was disallowed.
Off the post
Ajax nearly scored against the run of play in the 59th minute. An excellent corner from Van de Beek, and Alvarez dived in to head towards goal ahead of Kovacic, but it hit the outside of the post and clear.
Finally, Chelsea opened the scoring through Mitchy Batshuayi in the 86th minute. It was brilliant from Pulisic, just as it was on Saturday. He forced his way to the left byline, crossed low, and Alonso stepped over it. It fell to Batshuayi, 10 yards out with the ball behind him, but he stretched left-footed, and slammed the ball off the bar and in.
Despite the defeat, Ajax are at the top of the group with 6 points, same as second-placed Chelsea who are second but have scored fewer goals.
