CK Akonnor’s credentials are unquestioned but James Kwesi Appiah has revealed his own views on why he has chosen Akonnor as his assistant for Ghana.
Akonnor, having dramatically left Asante Kotoko several months ago, was delighted to be named as Ghana’s new assistant in October. The former Black Stars international will make his debut against South Africa and Sao Tome in this week’s AFCON 2021 Qualifiers.
"I think CK Akonnor has coached many of the big clubs in Ghana and I also have the believe that many coaches should be given the opportunity to be at the national team,” Appiah told the media via GhanaWeb.
“I don't know maybe tomorrow I might say I am not coaching again who then do we all rely on, do we go back to the whites or we fall on our own.”
“So it's important others people be given the opportunity to be closer to the players and then have the opportunity to see what we do on and off the pitch"
Ghana will host South Africa at the Cape Coast Stadium on Thursday 14 November before journeying to São Tomé and Príncipe for Monday 18 November.
