Ghana's Thomas Partey and Kudus Mohammed scored as the Black Stars defeated Bafana Bafana in a Group C AFCON 2021 opening game this evening.
Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah gave two debuts to Iddrisu Baba and Alfred Duncan - while the likes of Thomas Partey, Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew covered the spine.
Bafana Bafana were forced for an early subsititution when Bongani Zungu suffered an ankle injury. He was replaced by Thapelo Morena shortly after 15 minutes.
The Cape Coasts narrrow pitch made for a scrappy start that was littered with endless fouls. The first chance of the game fell for South Africa's Bradley Grobler who scuffed the ball over the bar from 12 meters. Ghana's Partey shot from about 18 yards into the net with a fizzing low shot past goalkeeper Ronwen Wiliams on 35 minutes.
No further action was seen as the referee sent both sides to the break at 1-0. SA were the first to change around 55 minutes as Lebohang Mothiba came on for Grobler upfront. Ghana shortly replied with their own sub. Debutant Alfred Duncan made way for the 19-year-old attacking midfielder Kudus.
The left-footer was immediately lively putting in crosses and starting play in & around Bafana's defense. The FC Nordsjælland star then picked up a ball inside the last third to dribble past SA's defense before unleashing a cracking shot into the net with his right boot. 2-0!
Kudos to Kudos. Tremendous strike from the Ghanaian teenager, who’s left with acres to play in. 2-0. pic.twitter.com/wtkVOTYVN0— Joe Crann (@YesWeCrann) November 14, 2019
The Black Stars maintained control after Kudus' 80th minute strike and finished the evening with all three points. Ghana next travel to Sao Tome & Principe on Monday while South Africa will welcome Sudan in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon.
