Zesco United have remained winless in the CAF Champions League following a 1-1 draw against Primiero de Agosto on Saturday evening played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
Zesco United welcomed the Angolan side, Agosto, knowing they had no chance of progressing to the next round but they were hoping to finally record their first win of the group stage.
George Lwandamina decided to bench John Ching'andu in favor of Mwape Mwelwa with Quadri Kola, Jesse Jackson Were and Winston Kalengo leading the front line.
The hosts started strong and created a number of chances from the onset but they were wasteful. Kola, Kalengo, and Jesse Were all had chances to put Zesco in the lead but they somehow failed to even make the goalkeeper, Adilson Cipriano work.
Zesco finally broke the deadlock, Four minutes into the second stanza, An inch-perfect cross from Mwape Mwelwa found Winston Kalengo in acres of space and the veteran striker made no mistake as he headed the hosts into the lead.
Zesco seemed to have found their mojo again after the goal but like in the first half they were a let down in the final third squandering chance after chance.
Against the run of play Agosto leveled matters in the 69th minute, Ary Papel controlled well a poor headed clearance from Clement Mwape before dribbling past one defender and slotting home with a fantastic finish to make it 1-1.
After conceding, Zesco tried to push for the win but it did not come and they had to settle for a point meaning they remain winless in the group stage after five games.
The result also confirms Zamalek SC's qualification to the quarter-finals and officially eliminates Primiero de Agosto.
