AC Milan 1-1 Juventus: Ronaldo's stoppage time penalty denies Rossoneri first-leg home win

A 90th minute Cristiano Ronaldo penalty gave Juventus an important away goal in the Coppa Italia first leg semifinal match against AC Milan at the San Siro on Thursday night.

The hosts took the lead on the 61st minute but were reduced to 10 with 18 minutes of regulation time, and the visitors took advantage to equalize and set a tense second-leg at the Allianz Stadium.

It was a fairly balanced match between the two heavyweights, even though the home team enjoyed massive possession and created clear-cut chances for much of the game.

The home team made a bright start and came close on the fifth minute as Kessi unleashed a fierce shot that was saved by Gigi Buffon.

Two minutes later Milan went for another attack, this time Rebic testing the keeper once again from the edge of the box, forcing a reflex save.

Milan continued with their runnings in the middle of the park with Castillejo and Calabria working their socks off to mark Cristiano Ronaldo out of the match.

The visitors, however, got their balls together and started enjoying some possession going into the half-hour mark, coming close to taking the lead only for Aaron Ramsey to bizarrely block a goal-bound Paolo Dybala shot on the 22nd minute.

Calabria then forced Buffon into a fine save on the 25th minute as his goal-bound shot was acrobatically saved by the former Italy international.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was then shown a yellow card on the 35th minute for hitting  De Ligt in the face while jumping for the ball, ruling him out of the return leg.

The match went into the break with both sides tied 0-0, even though Milan were unlucky not to have the lead.

The second half started with both sides going on the offensive. First, Rebic picked a pass and unleashed a strong shot from inside the box, two minutes after the restart, but the goalkeeper was equal to it.

Ibrahimovic then came close to grabbing the opener after he was put clear on goal, but his shot on his weaker left foot was tipped to the side of the net by Buffon.

On the 61st minute, the hosts took a well-deserved lead, as Rebic fired in a clever shot past Buffon at his near post following a perfect cross from Castillejo.

Juventus felt they were denied a penalty on the 65th minute after Rebic clattered Cuadrado inside the box, but the referee could not have any of it as play continued.

Milan were reduced to 10 men on the 72nd minute after Theo Hernandez was shown a second yellow for a clumsy challenge on Dybala, leaving his side to battle with 10 men for the remaining 18 minutes.

The hosts coped well with Hernandez's dismissal, but their good work was undone on the 89th minute as Calabria handled a Cristiano Ronaldo overhead kick, and after VAR checks, the referee awarded a penalty.

The Portuguese comfortably converted the resulting kick to draw level, but none of the sides could find the winning goal despite having seven minutes of added time.
