Messi makes history with Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award

As if a sixth Ballon d'Or was not enough, Lionel Messi has now made history again, by winning the Laureus Sportsman of the Year prize.

The Barcelona forward has now set two records with this win, as he shared the prize with Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton.

This win is one for history books because:

  • The tie to win the award with Lewis Hamilton was because they racked up the same number of votes. There has never been a tie for this award.
  • This was also the first time in history that a footballer was named the winner of the Laureus Sportsman of the Year prize.

In his absence, Messi sent a message saying: "I apologize I was not able to come to the event tonight."

"I really wanted to be there but unfortunately I could not make it.

"I would like to thank the Academy for giving me this recognition.

"The truth is that this is a very special award and I am honored to be the first to win this from a team sport. Thank you very much."

The two stars beat Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal, Marc Marquez, and Eliud Kipchoge to the top spot.
