The Barcelona forward has now set two records with this win, as he shared the prize with Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton.
This win is one for history books because:
- The tie to win the award with Lewis Hamilton was because they racked up the same number of votes. There has never been a tie for this award.
- This was also the first time in history that a footballer was named the winner of the Laureus Sportsman of the Year prize.
In his absence, Messi sent a message saying: "I apologize I was not able to come to the event tonight."
"I really wanted to be there but unfortunately I could not make it.
"I would like to thank the Academy for giving me this recognition.
"The truth is that this is a very special award and I am honored to be the first to win this from a team sport. Thank you very much."
The two stars beat Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal, Marc Marquez, and Eliud Kipchoge to the top spot.
