Former Bafana Bafana star, Steven Pienaar, has recalled national team problems during his high success at club level.
As is well-documented, Pienaar goes down as one of South Africa’s greatest exports to Europe with success at Ajam Amsterdam and Everton, including short stays at Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur.
But “Schillo” never sparkled in a Bafana jersey…
“In South Africa, people didn’t think I gave everything for my country. Yet maybe they don’t realise that, unlike when I played in Europe, whenever I came back for South Africa there was always a lot of new players for every single game. Like, nine new players who I didn’t know and two days to train with them,” Pienaar told The Athletic.
“I was playing games barely knowing new players’ names. Two days is not enough to get to know how someone plays. Teams need a base and foundation and we didn’t have that with the national team. It’s hard to win games like this and the players who played in Europe tended to get the blame,” concluded the former Ajax Cape Town player.
