Arsenal keen to extend David Luiz stay but on a reduced contract

Arsenal is ready to offer defender David Luiz a contract extension but on certain conditions key being to reduce his wages.

The players’ agent last week said that there was a high chance that his client will stay at the Emirates with Mikel Arteta said to be keen to keep Luiz due to his leading capabilities.

Luiz joined Arsenal from Chelsea last summer for £8m on a contract worth £130,000-a-week which was for one year with a 12-month option but according to The Mirror, the fee might be reduced in the new deal.

It could mean that Arsenal offers Luiz a deal based more on appearances and incentives to try and reach a compromise with all parties keen to get it done.

The decision, according to the reports, is due to the effect of coronavirus that is expected to hit teams across the globe.

There had been reports that Arsenal paid £1million in agent fees to get the original deal done but a club source denied the reports as they hope they will reach a new agreement with the 33-year-old.

The reduced wages for Luiz is further pinned on the options at Arteta’s disposal with the club having a wealth of centre-halves that includes Sokratis, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers and Willian Saliba.
